Bullying
Strengthening your child’s support system when they need it most.
Bullying can be described as any behaviour that intends to hurt someone by asserting power over them. Bullies target those who they perceive as weaker or different in some sense. They can target their victims anywhere at any time.
Types of Bullying
When most people think of bullying, they instantly think of a huge powerful kid hitting a small weaker one. Although that is one kind of bullying, it’s not the only one.
Bullying comes in many different forms, including:
Physical bullying
This is the most recognized and easily noticed type of bullying. It involves the use of physical aggression to overpower someone. Things like hitting, punching, kicking, and pushing are examples of physical bullying.
Verbal bullying
This includes things like name-calling, ridiculing, and insulting someone. Verbal attacks can be targeted at a person’s appearance, behaviour, or identity. Comments regarding someone’s race, sexuality, disability or religion fall under this category. Verbal bullying can cause severe emotional damage.
Social bullying
Also known as relational aggression, this is a very subtle form of bullying which involves actions that intend to harm someone’s reputation and relationships. Spreading rumors, lying, and trying to exclude someone are examples of social bullying. This is why it’s much harder to identify, just like its damage.
Cyberbullying
This involves the use of technology and online mediums to ridicule, harass, or hurt someone. Making threats, posting or leaking pictures to embarrass or humiliate them, and sending obnoxious texts are examples of cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying is sadly becoming more and more common among children due to their increased access to technology and social media. It is also the most effective way to bully someone because of the low risk of being caught.
Impact of Bullying
Bullying, in all its forms, can take a massive toll on kids. Its effects can be physical, emotional, and psychological in nature.
It is important to keep a lookout for the following signs in case your child is getting bullied:
Changes in physical health (stomach aches and headaches)
Academic decline
Avoidance behaviours (skipping school)
Sleep disturbances (insomnia or nightmares)
Social isolation
Self-harm
Suicidal ideation
